About
The Wilcox Historical Society is dedicated to preserving, sharing, and celebrating the rich history and cultural heritage of Alabama’s Black Belt. Through restoration efforts, educational programming, and community engagement, we work to ensure that the stories of our region are not only remembered, but experienced.
Our signature event, the Wilcox Tour of Homes, is a nationally recognized heritage tourism experience that invites guests inside some of Alabama’s most remarkable and rarely seen historic homes, churches, and landmarks. Held annually in different communities throughout Wilcox County, the tour offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to step beyond the front door and into the layered history of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
What sets our tour apart is its authenticity and depth. These are not museum spaces—they are privately owned homes, thoughtfully preserved and opened to the public for one weekend only. Guests experience original architecture, period furnishings, and personal stories that bring each property to life.
In addition to the tour, the Society specializes in:
- Historic preservation and restoration initiatives
- Educational programming and public history outreach
- Genealogy and local history research support
- Community revitalization through heritage tourism
As Alabama approaches America’s 250th anniversary, the Wilcox Tour of Homes continues to highlight the people, places, and stories that shaped our state and nation—offering visitors an unforgettable connection to the past in one of Alabama’s most historic regions.
