A Healthy Dose of Growth
Alabama’s next generation of nurses is getting more room to grow. Across the University of Alabama System, expanded programs, faster degree pathways, and hands-on training are opening more doors into one of the state’s most essential professions.
According to the University of Alabama System, approximately 39,000 Alabama nurses have indicated plans to retire by 2027, while the state is projected to face a shortage of 14,000 nurses by next year. Universities are responding by creating more opportunities for students to enter the field and begin serving communities across Alabama.
More Seats, Faster Paths
At the Capstone College of Nursing, the University of Alabama plans to double enrollment and graduate more than 550 nurses annually. The expansion includes additional faculty, more clinical partnerships, and substantially more classroom and simulation space.
UAB is adding another starting point by taking its nursing program year-round. Its BSN program welcomed its first summer cohort of 72 students, giving future nurses greater flexibility in when they begin their studies and helping more graduates reach the workforce sooner.
In Huntsville, UAH is introducing a redesigned four-semester BSN curriculum this fall while continuing its accelerated three-semester option for students who already hold bachelor’s degrees. Different routes, same destination: more trained nurses ready to put their skills to work.
From Classroom to Community
UAH’s Neighborhood Nursing initiative takes that training beyond campus. Under faculty supervision, nursing students provide preventive screenings, health education, and connections to additional care in rural North Alabama, gaining clinical experience while bringing services directly into local communities.
Across the UA System, scholarships, expanded facilities, accelerated pathways, clinical partnerships, and community-based training are giving more students a way into nursing and more ways to get experience before graduation.
That makes this expansion bigger than adding seats to a classroom. It’s about creating a stronger pipeline from Alabama campuses to hospitals, clinics, and communities across the state. With more students getting the chance to answer the call, Alabama’s next nursing shift is already clocking in!
