By kickoff, Birmingham will already have hosted a parade, welcomed rival marching bands and made room for generations of alumni. At the Magic City Classic, football has a full day of company, and halftime deserves your undivided attention.
The Magic City Classic returns to Legion Field on October 31, 2026, bringing Alabama A&M University in Huntsville and Alabama State University in Montgomery together for their 85th Classic meeting. The schools supply the rivalry. Birmingham supplies the gathering place, where loyalties arrive with families, classmates and years of shared history.
Organizers put participation across the surrounding activities at roughly 200,000, with about 60,000 attending the game. That difference helps explain the Classic’s reach. Plenty of the weekend’s meaning happens beyond the seats, through reunions, tailgates and the simple business of seeing people again.
The Classic’s history gives those encounters considerable depth. Its results stretch back to 1940, recording decades of close games, lopsided victories and three ties. The ledger even includes separate spring and fall meetings in 2021. Each score belongs to a particular year; the gathering gives alumni a reason to keep returning long after their own campus years end.
Saturday begins early. The Magic City Classic Parade steps off downtown at 8 a.m. Central, starting at 18th Street North and Seventh Avenue North. Both universities’ bands and dance teams participate, and the event proceeds rain or shine. School pride apparently does not require a favorable forecast.
The parade also puts these historically Black universities in front of an audience that extends beyond ticket holders. Admission is free, and television broadcasts reach Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, Dothan and Mobile. For Alabama families watching from the curb or the couch, the morning offers its own way into the tradition.
According to the game-day schedule, the pregame tailgate party runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Legion Field’s west-side parking lot before the 2:30 p.m. kickoff. Halftime brings Alabama A&M’s Marching Maroon & White and Alabama State’s Mighty Marching Hornets into their own contest.
That second competition helps explain why calling this a football outing feels incomplete. The musicians and dancers carry school identity as visibly as the players do. Across the streets, parking lots and field, the Classic makes space for several generations to participate in the same tradition, each with someone different to cheer.
