Free Flicks, Fresh Air!
Summer evenings are made for lawn chairs, popcorn, and movies that somehow feel even better under the stars. Across the state, free outdoor movie nights are giving families plenty of reasons to stay out a little later before summer slips away.
Roll Credits, Not Your Budget
From beloved classics to newer favorites, communities across the state are turning parks and amphitheaters into open-air theaters where admission doesn't cost a thing. The Oxford Outdoors Movie Series, sponsored by the Oxford Performing Arts Center, is serving up a variety of family-friendly favorites with Back to the Future on July 25, Finding Nemo on August 1, and The Lion King (1994) on August 8. Whether you're introducing the kids to a favorite from your childhood or happily quoting every line yourself, it's an easy excuse for a summer night out.
Over in Mobile County, the fun continues with Summer Movie Nights, a free outdoor movie series presented by Mobile County Parks. Upcoming screenings include Cars at Escatawpa Hollow Park & Campground on July 24 and Angels in the Outfield at West Mobile County Park on July 31. The movies begin at 8 p.m., giving everyone plenty of time to settle in before the opening credits roll.
Alabaster adds a little extra fun to the mix with their Movies at the Water Tower series, where free activities kick things off before the show starts. Head to the amphitheater beside City Hall to catch Goat (2026) beginning at 7 p.m. on July 24.
And in Huntsville, Free Family Movie Nights continue every Wednesday throughout the summer with a lineup that includes Cars, Madagascar, Despicable Me, Space Jam, Monsters, Inc., and Sing, making it easy to catch a favorite even if you miss one week.
Movie Night Made Easy
The beauty of these movie nights is how little planning they require. Toss a blanket or a couple of lawn chairs in the car, grab the bug spray, maybe pack a few favorite snacks, and arrive early enough to claim a prime spot before the crowd settles in.
With several communities hosting free screenings over the next few weeks, there's still plenty of time to squeeze in one more memorable summer tradition. Sometimes the best seat in the house isn't in a theater at all. It's on a blanket, beneath the Alabama sky, waiting for the movie to begin.
