From Firehouse to Finish Line

What if I told you the Olympics were coming to Alabama this summer? Okay, they’re not. But the spirit of competition is still heating up.

From June 27 to July 6, Birmingham is hosting the World Police & Fire Games, 11 days of fierce competition between first responders from all around the globe. That’s right—Birmingham is transforming into a global stage for heroism, athleticism, and community spirit. And you can watch it for free.

So what’s happening? The festivities kick off on June 27 with an Opening Ceremony at the BJCC Legacy Arena, featuring the Parade of Athletes, the Raising of the Flag, and the Lighting of the Cauldron. The celebration continues at the Athletes Village, a hub for camaraderie and cultural exchange. The Games conclude on July 6 with a Closing Ceremony at City Walk, where the flag will be passed to the next host city.

And in between? Sports. Participants, including police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, corrections officers, and even K-9 officers, will showcase their skills in events ranging from traditional sports like basketball and soccer to unique challenges such as the “Ultimate Firefighter” and “Toughest Competitor Alive.”

Because at their core, that’s what the World Police & Fire Games are about: heroes. They’re a tribute to the dedication and bravery of public safety personnel worldwide. Bringing together over 8,500 first responders from more than 70 countries, these games are a chance to witness the incredible talents of first responders from around the globe—and honor those who have fallen.

Want to get in on the action? Birmingham residents have a unique opportunity to be part of this monumental event. Over 2,500 volunteers are needed to assist with various aspects of the Games, from athlete registration to event logistics. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and sign up.

If you’re not able to help, don’t worry—you can still enjoy the festivities. Spectators are welcome to attend events free of charge—yes, free. So whether you're a die-hard sports fan, a supporter of first responders, or just looking for a fun and family-friendly summer outing, come on down. There’s something at the Games for everyone.
