Helena has a perfectly sensible plan for the second weekend of October: live music, local food, a little shopping, and several thousand rubber ducks hurtling over a waterfall.
Buck Creek Goes Quackers
Helena’s Buck Creek Festival returns Oct. 9–10 Helena Amphitheater Park, bringing two days of free hometown fun and live music to the banks of Buck Creek. Friday night starts with Space of a Day and OPOV Band, while Saturday’s lineup includes the Helena High School Jazz Band, Oxmoor, More Cowbell, and M-80’s. It’s the kind of bill that makes packing a lawn chair feel like solid weekend planning.
Saturday afternoon, however, belongs to the ducks. At 3 p.m., thousands of bright rubber competitors are released above the dam for the festival’s annual Duck Race. They tumble over the waterfall, bob downstream, and eventually meet the waiting “duck wranglers.” Spectators can adopt ducks for the race, with prizes adding a little friendly suspense to an event where nobody has to worry about an actual bird going rogue.
There’s plenty happening on dry land, too. The 2026 vendor lineup brings together Alabama makers and festival-food favorites, including A Bit of Honey Artisanal Pottery, Dolce Vita Candle Co., Rock Creek Boutique, Sweet Home Scones, BG’s Mini Donuts, Uncle G’s Pizza, and Venice Gelato. Families can also grab a $10 armband for all-day access to the children’s activity area.
A Festival That Gives Back
The silliness has a serious local payoff. The Buck Creek Festival is a nonprofit event, and organizers report that more than $315,000 has been returned to the Helena community over the festival’s lifetime. That means every concert set, vendor tent, and rubber-duck stampede helps support a tradition with roots well beyond one October weekend.
Helena’s festival calendar doesn’t need a grand gimmick when a tiny yellow duck will do. By Saturday afternoon, Buck Creek will be full of them, and a community tradition will be racing right alongside.
