Long Days, Late Adventures!

Long Days, Late Adventures!

June 21 marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. With sunsets stretching later into the evening, it's the perfect excuse to trade another night on the couch for live music, after-hours attractions, and summer fun that doesn't start winding down at dinnertime.

The best part about those extra daylight hours is how they seem to open up the evening. Suddenly there's time for one more stop, one more activity, or one more reason to stay out a little longer. Across Alabama, attractions are embracing the season with extended hours, special events, and experiences designed to make the most of summer's longest days.

Golden Hour Gets Even Better

At Huntsville Botanical Garden, Friday evenings take on a slower pace during Golden Hour, a summer series running through September. Bring a blanket, pack a picnic, and settle in for an evening of live music surrounded by some of the Garden's best summer scenery.

This year comes with a welcome bonus! Admission is free beginning at 5 p.m. during Golden Hour events thanks to support from the Huntsville Music Office and the City of Huntsville's Office of Multicultural Affairs.

It's hard to find a better argument for leaving work on time. Instead of heading straight home, you can spend the evening surrounded by flowers, trees, and live music while the sun slowly sinks below the horizon.

Summer Nights Aren't Just for Kids

Birmingham's McWane Science Center is taking a different approach with McWane After Dark: Adult Summer Camp. Think summer camp without bug spray, bunk assignments, or a counselor telling you lights out means lights out.

The adults-only event includes campfires, s'mores, trivia, tie dye, arts and crafts, mini golf, survival skills demonstrations, and access to all four levels of the Adventure Halls. Guests can also grab food, enjoy a live science show, and explore exhibits after hours with a drink in hand.

Meanwhile, Alabama Adventure Amusement Park & Splash Adventure Water Park in Bessemer are stretching the fun well into the evening with special nighttime events throughout the summer. Adult Nights return August 7 with extended hours, DJs, dancing, and a kid-free atmosphere. Families can also catch the park's Dive-In Movie event on June 26, where guests can watch a film from the wave pool while enjoying evening access to the water park.

All in all, the Summer Solstice may only last one day, but Alabama's lineup of evening events proves there's no reason to waste those extra daylight hours. After all, summer evenings are a limited-time offer. You might as well use every last minute of them!
