Low-Key Plans, High-Quality Sunday

Not every Sunday has to start with a calendar and a caffeine-fueled sprint! Around here, we’re more about cinnamon rolls than spin class… And if it takes you until noon to put on real pants, you’re in good company!

The best Sundays in Alabama aren’t packed with plans, after all. They unfold slowly, one cozy stop at a time. From breezy parks to historic bakeries and bookstores that smell like actual paper, these local gems were made for a day off done right.

Start with Something Sweet and Strong

First stop: Savage’s Bakery in Homewood. It’s been a Birmingham staple since 1939, and once you’ve had a Meltaway or one of their old-fashioned cinnamon rolls… You’ll understand why.

  • Their cinnamon rolls are not a side item—they’re an event!
  • Recipes are original, the ovens have history, and yes… They still use real butter!
  • Bonus: You’ll likely walk out with a smiley cookie or two whether you meant to or not.

From there, head to Church Street Coffee & Books in Mountain Brook. Tucked behind Crestline Village, this indie staple nails the blend of chill vibes and addictive baked goods.

  • The Breakup Cookie is famous for a reason—gooey center, crispy edges, justtt enough sea salt.
  • The staff are pros at pairing people with the right book!
  • It’s the kind of place where you might stay longer than you meant to—and be glad you did.

And if you’re in Auburn, Well Red is your Sunday trifecta: books, coffee, and wine. That’s not a punchline—it’s their actual business model.

Move Just Enough to Call It a Stroll

Once the sugar hits, it’s time to wander—and Alabama’s got parks made for unhurried laps.

  • Railroad Park in Birmingham gives you skyline views, 600+ trees, and nine acres of lawn that basically say, “don’t rush.” With walking loops, shady benches, and a soundtrack of passing trains, it’s ideal for digesting carbs or big thoughts.
  • Kiesel Park in Auburn is the city’s largest green space, with 124 acres, a historic house, and a dog park where Sunday moods run off-leash.
  • Bluff Park offers one of the best porch-swing views in the state. Settle in near Lover’s Leap and take in the sweep of Shades Valley—sunsets are especially strong here!

Because a great Sunday doesn’t have to be productive. It just has to be peaceful, well-fed, and a little bit scenic.
