Meet Me at the Marina!

Alabama in late summer has a persuasive argument for clearing the calendar: 45,000 acres of water, a pontoon waiting at the dock and fried catfish somewhere in your near future. Lake season here doesn’t require committing to one grand destination. 

Alabama’s lake communities each have their own rhythm, which means a weekend can be built around fishing in Eufaula, boating on Smith Lake or pulling up to dinner by water on Lake Martin.

Pick Your Kind of Lake Day

Start in southeast Alabama at Lake Eufaula, where Lakepoint State Park sits along the 45,000-acre reservoir. Its marina makes the logistics pleasantly simple, with boat rentals, ramps and transient docking, plus fishing licenses, bait and tackle available right there. In other words, forgetting the bait at home doesn’t have to become the family story of the summer.

Farther north, Lake Guntersville State Park stretches along the Tennessee River. The park’s Town Creek Fishing Center is especially handy for anglers, with two boat ramps, an accessible fishing pier, live and artificial bait and rentals ranging from canoes and kayaks to pontoons and bass boats.

Smith Lake shifts the agenda toward cruising. Smith Lake Marina rents pontoons and other boats, with Drifters Bar & Grill waiting back at the marina when hunger wins. Over in Crane Hill, Trident Marina offers pontoon rentals alongside The Grille at Trident Marina, so the distance between “one more lap around the lake” and lunch is admirably short.

Save Room for Lake Martin

Then there’s Lake Martin, where marina-hopping can become the day’s entire itinerary. Russell Marine operates Kowaliga, The Ridge, River North and Real Island marinas around the lake, giving boaters plenty of places to make a stop.

The finale practically plans itself at Kowaliga Restaurant, where guests can arrive by car or boat and settle onto the deck overlooking Lake Martin. The menu leans Southern, with Conecuh sausage, catfish and Gulf shrimp among the choices.

That’s lake living at its most useful: pick a stretch of water, find a dock and leave enough daylight for one more hour outside.
