Melon Mania!

Melon Mania!

The sweet, juicy burst of a fresh watermelon slice instantly conjures up memories of backyard picnics and lazy afternoons. But in Franklin County, watermelon isn’t just a symbol of summers gone by—it’s a full-blown tradition that turns an ordinary weekend into something sweet.

On August 15-16, Russellville—AKA “The Watermelon Capital of Alabama” —is coming alive for the Franklin County Watermelon Festival, a celebration of everyone's favorite summer treat. With live music, quirky contests, and more, there’s a slice of fun for the whole family!

A watermelon-themed 5K and fun run kick things off for early risers, followed by a classic car and truck show, a watermelon pageant, and contests for the biggest, most unusual, and best-dressed melons. And yes—there will be a seed-spitting competition, because what’s summer in Alabama without a little friendly, fruit-fueled rivalry?

Not a huge watermelon fan? There’ll be plenty of other snacks available to sink your teeth into, including summer fair staples like funnel cakes, lemonade, and more. Vendors will also be on hand selling handmade crafts, clothing, and art. And while the adults shop and snack, kids can enjoy a variety of games and activities.

No summer shindig is complete without tunes. This year’s entertainment lineup features a mix of country, rock, and Southern soul, with live performances from Austin BohannonDixie MafiaThe Midnighters, and more local legends throughout the weekend. Bring a lawn chair or just dance along the sidewalks—the energy is contagious.

Whether you’re a longtime local or visiting for the first time, the Franklin County Watermelon Festival offers a perfect slice of Alabama summer—packed with sweet traditions, lively music, and plenty of family fun. Best of all, admission is completely free, making it easy for everyone to join in the juicy celebration that brings the community together.

It’s a weekend to savor the simple joys of summer and create memories that last long after the last seed is spit. So mark your calendar, bring your appetite, and get ready to dive into the sweetest weekend of the year.
