Mine Today, Money Tomorrow

Something’s heating up in Alabama’s old mines, and it’s not coal! The Alabama Department of Workforce just awarded $11 million in federal grant funding for the 2025 Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) Program. A partnership with the federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), AMLER focuses on breathing new life into abandoned mine lands by eliminating environmental hazards, improving public safety, and creating opportunities for economic revitalization.

From Mine Shafts to Money Makers

This funding targets abandoned coal sites from before 1977, giving communities a chance to pitch plans that could include:

  • Factory floor fantasies: Redeveloping old mine lands for industrial use could draw manufacturers looking for ready-to-go space.
  • Retail revival: Shops and business hubs could bring jobs and traffic, injecting cash flow into smaller towns.
  • Playground potential: Parks or recreational spaces not only improve quality of life but can attract tourism dollars and events.

Jobs That Dig Deep

The impact goes beyond shiny new buildings. Construction and redevelopment will put people to work right away, while long-term businesses built on these reclaimed lands can create steady employment in manufacturing, retail, and service sectors. Safer, greener, and more attractive communities can also pull in residents and investors who might have otherwise passed these towns by.

The $11 million AMLER grant program is open to communities in Bibb, Fayette, Jefferson, Marion, Shelby, Tuscaloosa, and Walker counties. Interested towns and organizations have until January 31, 2026, to submit their proposals for turning abandoned mine lands into productive, job‑creating spaces.

For Alabama’s smaller towns and former coal hubs, these grants aren’t just a cleanup program; they’re a chance to reinvent the local economy, attract new investment, and build community pride. Mining may be in the past, but opportunity is very much in the present.
