Nature’s Open, Get Steppin’

You know how it goes. The sun’s out, the pollen’s doing its thing, and suddenly every walk around the neighborhood feels like cardio. You’re sweating through your errands, your dog’s pacing at the door, and your sneakers haven’t seen daylight since football season. Might as well make all of this movin' count, right?

Luckily, Alabama’s full of places where you can move your body and actually enjoy it. You don’t need fancy gear or a six-pack to hike, bike, or paddle your way through a spring afternoon—you just need an excuse to get out there. So... Here it is!

Cheaha: For When You Want a View With Your Sweat

Start with Cheaha State Park. Want to hike but not all the way? Good news is, you can drive most of the way up—and we don't blame you! Cheaha is the tallest (natural) point in Alabama! The trails range from easy boardwalks with big payoffs to rocky climbs that’ll make you earn your selfie. The Pulpit Rock’s trail is always a solid bet: quick, scenic, and just enough effort to feel impressive.

Cahaba River: Paddle Now, Nap Later

If you’d rather sit down while breaking a sweat, the Cahaba River’s your move. It's Alabama's longest, free-flowing river! Grab a kayak (or borrow one) and float past wildflowers, bluffs, and—if you time it right—those weirdly beautiful Cahaba lilies that bloom right out of the water. Don’t be surprised if you forget paddling acually counts as exercise!

Chief Ladiga: The Trail With Zero Guesswork

No rocks. No roots. Just a smooth, paved path that winds 33 miles from Anniston to the Georgia state line. The Chief Ladiga Trail is a favorite for cyclists, joggers, stroller-pushers, and people who just want to feel outdoorsy without committing to a wilderness survival moment.

Trail Bingo: Alabama Edition

Keep your eyes peeled for some of these local favorites while you’re out and about:

  • Fox squirrels – bigger than you’d expect, and way too fast to photograph!
  • Barred owls – staring at you like you interrupted something important...
  • Box turtles – crossing the trail like they’ve got all day (because they do).
  • Mountain laurel – basically Alabama’s version of a wildflower runway.
  • Pitcher plants – weird, beautiful, and secretly carnivorous!

No Treadmill, No Problem!

Most of these spots are either free or nearly free to explore. So throw on whatever shoes are clean, pack a snack, and remind yourself what spring in Alabama actually feels like. But check out www.guidetoalabama.com/sports-fitness to get the right gear before you go!
