New Hangars, New Heights at BHM

When most people think about airport upgrades, they picture longer security lines or new food courts. But over at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, something bigger is taking flight.

Fasten your seatbelts! Things are taking off in Birmingham this summer…literally! Atlantic Aviation is hard at work on a $40 million redevelopment project that’s set to modernize and expand the airport in a big way. But this upgrade isn’t about commercial terminals—it’s about private jets, business travel, and putting Birmingham on the map for high-end aviation.

Who is Atlantic Aviation?

Atlantic Aviation is one of the largest private jet service providers in the U.S. They take care of everything for non-commercial flights—fueling, parking, passenger lounges, maintenance, and more. At BHM, that means serving everyone from business travelers to sports teams, to celebrities flying in for SEC weekends!

What’s Coming to BHM?

  • A new 7,500-square-foot executive terminal building designed for business travelers and VIPs.
  • Two 30,000-square-foot hangars with additional office and shop space to accommodate larger aircraft.
  • More ramp expansions!

Going Green

It’s not all about square footage and private jets. Atlantic is also building with sustainability in mind, aligning with their nationwide efforts to reduce emissions and promote cleaner operations. The project will include:

  • Solar panels installed on the terminal roof.
  • High-efficiency lighting and HVAC systems.
  • Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for both staff and passengers.

Why Birmingham?

  • BHM’s location makes it a strategic hub for business travel in the Southeast—between Atlanta, Nashville, and New Orleans.
  • Alabama’s growing healthcare, tech, and logistics industries mean more private and corporate traffic is expected.
  • Atlantic views Birmingham as a long-term growth opportunity for high-end general aviation services.

What It Means for Birmingham

  • The upgrade will increase airport capabilities, attract more charter traffic, and help support future job growth.
  • It will also enhance the airport’s appeal to companies considering expansion or relocation to central Alabama!

So next time you spot a sleek jet descending over I-20… It may be headed for a very upgraded landing. And with this kind of investment, Birmingham’s private aviation scene is ready for takeoff!
