Pedal to the Metal: Alabama’s EV Boom

If you’ve noticed less gas-guzzling trucks on the road this summer… You’re not seeing things! Alabama is hitting the accelerator on electric vehicles (EVs), and the buzz is electrifying

Alabama’s carving out a spot in what experts are calling the “Battery Belt”—a fast-growing EV production corridor stretching across the South. From Tuscaloosa to Montgomery, automakers are flipping the switch on a future filled with EVs, big batteries, and a whole lot of new jobs!

Mercedes-Benz Powers Up in Tuscaloosa

Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to Alabama, but their presence is about to get bigger and better. With all the new U.S. tariffs on foreign cars, it’s time to bring production stateside—and for Tuscaloosa, that means an expansion. By 2027, the Tuscaloosa Mercedes-Benz plant is expected to start producing the GLC SUV. The plant’s already turning out electric EQS and EQE SUVs, and now it’s turning up the heat.

Hyundai's High-Tech Leap in Montgomery

Down I-65, Hyundai in Montgomery is humming with energy. The first-ever EVs—including the sleek Genesis GV70, a luxury brand under the Hyundai umbrella—are now rolling off the line, thanks to a $300 million investment to retool the plant. Not to be outdone, Hyundai Mobis is building a $205 million battery module facility nearby that’ll hire up to 400 folks. Talk about plugging in!

Charging Ahead: Infrastructure & Workforce Development

But what good is an EV plant without someone to build it and somewhere to charge it? Luckily, Alabama is addressing both needs full throttle.

To meet the growing demand for skilled workers in the EV industry, Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT) is constructing a $30 million EV Technology Center. Set to open in early 2026, the center aims to train workers for the evolving automotive landscape. Because let’s be honest… Building the cars of tomorrow starts with people who know their way around a battery pack!

Alabama is also enhancing its EV charging infrastructure. The state added 300 fast chargers in the latter half of 2024, surpassing the national average for fast charging per capita. This expansion supports the growing number of EVs on the road and reduces range anxiety for drivers. No more worrying about a dead battery… Chargers are popping up around the state faster than Waffle Houses and Dollar Generals!

With these developments, Alabama is not just keeping pace with the EV revolution—it's helping drive it forward! And with jobs, tech, and chargers all revving up, there’s never been a better time to plug in and enjoy the ride.
