Relish the Fun in Birmingham!

Relish the Fun in Birmingham!

On June 27, Cahaba Brewing Company will transform into ground zero for one of the summer's most delightful competitions: The Great Birmingham Dog-Off. Running from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event brings together restaurants, talented home cooks, hungry attendees, and all the toppings you can dream of.

The concept is refreshingly simple. Competitors create their best hot dog creations, guests sample the entries, and the crowd decides who deserves bragging rights. No lengthy judging panels. No complicated scoring system. Just Birmingham residents doing what they do best when food is involved: enthusiastically sharing their opinions.

And judging by the enthusiasm already building around the event, there will be plenty of opinions to go around.

A Celebration of Backyard Food Culture

The timing feels particularly fitting. Late June is prime grilling season across Alabama, when neighborhoods smell faintly of charcoal and somebody is always experimenting with a new topping combination.

The Dog-Off, presented by Tuff Love Hospitality, leans directly into that spirit. Expect creative takes on the classic hot dog, plenty of local flavor, live music, cold drinks from Cahaba Brewing Company, and an atmosphere that feels closer to a giant backyard party than a traditional food festival.

Of course, there is one competition that may attract the biggest crowd.

At noon, contestants will square off in the hot dog-eating contest, where one ambitious participant will earn possession of the event's most coveted prize: the "gold glizzy." Whether that title belongs on a résumé remains unclear, but it will certainly make for a memorable Saturday.

More Than Just a Food Fight

Part of what makes the event resonate beyond the novelty is where the proceeds are headed. Ticket sales, priced at $15 in advance and $20 at the gate, help support Pink Boots Birmingham, an organization that advocates for women and non-binary individuals working in the fermented beverage industry throughout the region.

That connection gives the event an extra layer of community impact while keeping the mood firmly focused on fun.

Summer festivals often promise unforgettable experiences. Most involve live musicfood trucks, and long lines. The Great Birmingham Dog-Off offers something a little different: an afternoon dedicated to creative hot dogs, local talent, charitable giving, and the kind of good-natured competition that can only happen when everyone is arguing over toppings.

For Birmingham, that sounds like a pretty solid way to spend a Saturday.
