Step into history on March 5-8, when Selma comes alive for the Bridge Crossing Jubilee. Honoring the courage, resilience, and ongoing fight for voting rights, this event brings Selma together for a packed schedule of panels, performances, marches, and community celebrations that keep every corner of the city buzzing. From the first Voting Rights History Bowl to the Freedom Fest, each day blends reflection, education, and celebration, inviting visitors to experience history firsthand.

Thursday, March 5: Kickoff and Reflection

The Jubilee opens with a focus on knowledge and music, setting the tone for a weekend steeped in history.

  • Voting Rights History Bowl at R.B. Hudson Middle School – Middle and high school students test their knowledge of civil rights milestones.
  • SNCC Freedom Singers Performance – Hear the voices that helped shape the movement.
  • Mass Meeting Program at Tabernacle Baptist Church – Community gathering with speeches and music to honor the legacy of activists.

Friday, March 6: Education and Commemoration

Friday blends learning with remembrance, creating a bridge between past and present:

  • Educational Summit at Wallace Community College – Panels with civic leaders and scholars explore voting rights and civic engagement.
  • Children’s Sojourn – Kids follow the steps across the Pettus Bridge in honor of “Bloody Sunday.”

Sunday, March 8: Reflection and Tribute

The weekend closes with ceremonies that honor history while inspiring action for the future: 

  • Morning Worship Services – Begin the day with community reflection.
  • Pre-March Rally and March Backwards – Symbolic march before crossing the Pettus Bridge.
  • Freedom Fest on Water Avenue – Live music, food, and a gospel tribute to the Foot Soldiers.
