Summer Nights, Starry Sights

Ah, summer nights… The air’s thick, the cicadas are loud, and the sky? If you’re in the right spot, it puts on a show! We’re talking about the kind of starry sky that makes you forget about your phone, your inbox, and maybe even what day it is.

Lucky for us, Alabama has no shortage of perfect places to pitch a tent and catch a glimpse of the universe. From waterfall wonders to peaceful ponds, here's your guide to the best spots for summer stargazing.

First up: Cheaha State Park. You’ve probably been up there for the views (or to say you’ve stood on the highest point in the state)! But come back at night… With the lights of the world far below, the sky feels closer—like you could pluck a star right out of it! Bring a chair, lean back, and don’t be surprised if you lose track of time watching the constellations float by.

Want something more off the grid? Conecuh National Forest is the move. Down near the Florida line, it’s quiet, remote, and wild in the best way. Camp near Open Pond and you’ll get a front-row seat to a mirror-like lake and a sky full of stars. No traffic noise, no city glow—just crickets, frogs, and the (occasional) owl hoot.

If you’re more of a “give me a shower and a trail map” kind of camper, DeSoto State Park is a great pick! Nestled on Lookout Mountain, it’s got waterfalls by day and big sky views by night. Plus, Fort Payne is right down the road if you forget marshmallows (or want a milkshake after your hike—no judgment).

And don’t sleep on Bankhead National Forest! If you can handle a little rugged terrain, the Sipsey Wilderness offers some of the darkest skies in the state (bring a flashlight!). You’ll have to work for it, sure… But the reward is a view of the stars that feels straight out of a planetarium.

So whether you’re heading up the mountain or down to the woods, Alabama’s night skies are calling. Pack a blanket, some boiled peanuts, and maybe a telescope—and get ready to be reminded just how magical summer nights in the South can be!
