Tater Time!
When Labor Day weekend hits Alabama, it’s not just the end of summer—it’s a chance to slow down, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy a little small-town fun with family and friends. For many, that means heading to the lake, grabbing something fried and delicious, and kicking back with live music and good company. It’s the kind of weekend where flip-flops are encouraged, sweet tea is a given, and the vibe is pure Southern charm.
For one of this year’s sweetest summer send-offs, head to Cullman for the Sweet Tater Festival! Held every year at Smith Lake Park, this two-day event brings together everything we love—local food, handmade crafts, classic cars, live entertainment, and yes, plenty of sweet potatoes. Whether you like 'em fried, mashed, candied, or baked into a pie, get ready to go yam!
This year’s festival kicks off Sunday, August 31, and runs through Monday, September 1. Admission is just $5, and that gets you access to all the fun both days! Expect a full lineup of arts and crafts vendors, local food trucks serving up creative takes on the beloved sweet tater, and live entertainment that keeps the park buzzing all weekend long. This year, you can catch live sets from talented Alabama musicians like Hunter Welton, Cade Pierce, Ian Cuthbertson, and more, alongside the lively clogging performances of the Clog Wild Cloggers. Families can also take advantage of the park’s playground and splash pad, perfect for keeping the kids happy while you enjoy the lakeside atmosphere.
If you’re a fan of all things with wheels, the Sweet Tater Festival has you covered. Don’t miss the Sunday golf cart parade, a quirky and colorful tradition that kicks off the weekend’s fun and community spirit, followed by Monday’s highlight—the Sweet Tater Festival Car Show—where from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Smith Lake Park transforms into a classic car lover’s paradise, showcasing everything from vintage pickups to souped-up muscle cars.
With great food, lively music, classic rides, and plenty of Southern hospitality, the Sweet Tater Festival is the perfect way to soak up the end of summer in Alabama. Whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor, this celebration at Smith Lake Park promises good vibes, tasty treats, and memories made with friends and family. So bring your appetite and get ready to enjoy one of Alabama’s most fun and flavorful festivals!
