The Downtown Plot Twist
Some downtowns have a way of making you slow down, even when your calendar swears you do not have time. Monroeville’s historic downtown is one of those places, with storefronts, sidewalks, stories, and local pride all doing the quiet work of reminding people that “main street” is not just a phrase on a sign. Monroeville Main Street has spent more than a decade helping that heart beat louder. Since 2014, the nonprofit has worked to revitalize historic downtown Monroeville through economic growth, preservation, promotion, and one very clear invitation: “Write your chapter here.”
What makes Monroeville Main Street stand out is that it does not treat revitalization like a weekend cleanup project with matching T-shirts and good intentions. The organization follows the Main Street Four-Point Approach®, a proven framework focused on Organization, Promotion, Design, and Economic Vitality. In real-life terms, that means building partnerships, supporting small businesses, improving the look and feel of downtown, recruiting investment, and giving people more reasons to live, shop, work, and visit there. Formed as a 501(c)(6) nonprofit, Monroeville Main Street also brought together groups that had already been working to strengthen the town, including redevelopment, preservation, chamber, and tourism leaders, under one shared vision.
That vision has clearly done more than sit in a binder. Monroeville is one of only 34 Designated Main Street Alabama Communities, and in May 2024, it became Alabama’s first Great American Main Street Award-winning community. Led by Executive Director Anne Marie Bryan and a 15-member Board of Directors, the organization continues to offer small business support, incentive programs, coordinated marketing, and community development initiatives. Monroeville Main Street’s 2026 Best of Alabama Award feels less like a surprise ending and more like the next well-earned page.
