This Ain’t Our First (Deep Sea) Rodeo

There’s something about mid-July on Dauphin Island that just hits different… The air’s thick, the boats are buzzing before the sun’s up, and the dock chatter is a little louder than usual. If you know, you know—it’s that weekend.

Yes, the 92nd annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo is swimming back into town July 18–20! If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to hit the water (or the beer tent), this is it…

If you’re new around here, let’s get something straight: this isn’t just any old fishing trip. ADSFR is the world’s largest saltwater fishing tournament. It’s part competition, part community gathering, and part three-day beach party with boats and big fish. Over 4,000 anglers are expected, chasing prizes across 33 categories—everything from King Mackerel and Tuna to Cobia and Specks! And yes, you’ve got a shot at walking away with a fat check, with the total awards package valued up to a million dollars in cash and prizes. And if you don’t win? There’s always good old fashioned bragging rights!

Psst… If you’ve got a pint-sized fisherman in your family, don’t worry—they can join in the fun too! On July 12, children 15 and younger can compete in the 66th annual Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament, where they’ll have a chance to win prizes and be crowned Master Angler. But every kiddo walks away with a hotdog, ice cream, and Coke—so really, everyone’s a winner!

Besides, the rodeo isn’t just for serious fishermen. A lot of folks show up just for the atmosphere! There’s live music, local food trucks, cold beer to bring that unmistakable summer energy. It’s laid-back, it’s loud, it’s family-friendly—and it’s just plain fun! You’ll run into your high school buddy and maybe even your boss pretending they “know how” to fillet a snapper.

Behind all the fun is something a little deeper (no pun intended). The rodeo supports marine science, working with local researchers to collect data from the catches. So when you weigh in that fish, you’re also helping with research that keeps our Gulf healthy for future generations of anglers—and crawfish boils!

So what are you waiting for? Grab your tickets (don’t forget the tackle!) and come hang out with 75,000 of your closest friends. We’ll see you on the Island!
