Up, Up, & A Weekend Away!

Up, Up, & A Weekend Away!

There’s something about hot air balloons that makes adults stop what they’re doing and point up at the sky like kids again.

Maybe it’s because they move slower than everything else now. Maybe it’s the color. Maybe it’s the fact that no matter how many times you’ve seen one, a balloon floating overhead still feels slightly unreal.

Either way, the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic keeps that feeling alive every Memorial Day weekend, and by now it’s become part of the rhythm in Decatur.

Held May 23–24 at Point Mallard Park, the event has figured out something a lot of festivals never quite manage: it gives people enough to do without making the weekend feel overpacked.

The mornings start early with competition flights, when balloon pilots lift off just after sunrise and the whole field slowly comes to life. Even people who swear they are not “morning event” people somehow end up standing there with coffee in hand watching balloons drift over North Alabama before 7AM.

Then the rest of the day settles into its own pace. See the whole event schedule right here!

The Kind of Festival You Don’t Rush Through

Part of the Jubilee’s appeal is that nobody seems in a hurry once they get there. Families wander through arts and crafts vendors, kids lock onto the tethered balloon rides immediately, and somebody is always carrying a funnel cake larger than necessary across the field.

The lineup keeps the weekend moving without trying too hard:

  • Tethered hot air balloon rides
  • Live music throughout the weekend
  • Classic car and tractor shows
  • Festival food that fully commits to the assignment
  • Evening balloon glows followed by fireworks

And those evening glows are the real draw.

Once the sun drops, the field shifts completely. Balloons light up from the inside, colors start reflecting across the park, and the crowd naturally slows down to take it all in. There’s no complicated setup needed. People grab lawn chairs, find a patch of grass, and stay put until the fireworks finish the night.

That simplicity is probably why the event has lasted this long.

It doesn’t try to reinvent itself every year or turn into something trendier than it needs to be. It already knows what works: big skies, easy company, and a weekend built around looking up!
