Wetumpka Turns Back Time!

Wetumpka Turns Back Time!

Step back in time this November and trade your smartphone for a musket (temporarily, of course). From November 5–8, Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson Park in Wetumpka transforms into an 18th-century village during Alabama Frontier Days, one of the state’s most beloved living-history events. It’s part festival, part time machine, and completely worth the drive for anyone who loves discovering Alabama’s roots in a hands-on way!

Each year, the historic park comes alive with reenactors who make the state’s early frontier days feel surprisingly real. Wander through camps filled with the crackle of open fires, the ring of a blacksmith’s hammer, and the rhythmic sounds of drums and fifes. Soldiers in period uniforms perform musket drills while artisans shape pottery, weave baskets, and carve wood the same way it was done more than two centuries ago. It’s not just for history buffs…families, photographers, and curious locals will all find something to love!

For kids, it’s a rare chance to touch, see, and smell history in motion. Guided tours explain the fascinating story of Fort Toulouse and Fort Jackson, two sites that once stood at the crossroads of French, Creek, and American cultures. And if storytelling is more your speed, you’ll find plenty of lively characters eager to share tales of life on the frontier.

Of course, no Alabama festival is complete without food and music. Local vendors serve up hearty bites and sweet treats that make the whole park smell like a fall fairground, while live folk music drifts through the trees. It’s easy to spend a few hours soaking in the atmosphere, snapping photos, and just enjoying the mix of history and hospitality that Wetumpka does so well.

Alabama Frontier Days isn’t just about looking back; it’s about connecting with where we came from and celebrating the grit, creativity, and community that built this state. So grab your walking shoes and your sense of curiosity, and get ready for a journey through time right here at home!
