Where the Sky Steals the Show

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival! This springtime staple is soaring into Foley from April 30-May 2, turning the skies above OWA Parks & Resort into a colorful wonderland. This three-day event gives Baldwin County a front-row seat to one of the most visually striking weekends on the spring calendar, where balloons don’t just fly…they put on a full show!

Each day starts with scheduled morning balloon launches, when pilots inflate and lift off in view of the crowd, followed by a second round of evening launches that bring more people out as the sun starts to drop. After dark, the festival shifts into balloon glow programming, where balloons stay tethered and light up in coordinated bursts across the field. During the day, visitors can walk right up to select balloons and talk with pilots during interactive displays, which makes the experience feel a lot less hands-off than you’d expect.

What You’ll Find On The Grounds

Between those flight windows, the festival keeps a set schedule of activities and performances that are easy to drop into as you move around the property. Expect a mix of food, entertainment, and vendors:

  • Tethered balloon rides offering short lifts above the festival grounds
  • Live music performances booked throughout the weekend on-site stages
  • Food vendors serving everything from Gulf Coast seafood to classic festival staples
  • Arts and crafts booths featuring local makers and handmade goods
  • Frisbee dog shows with scheduled demonstrations that draw a crowd
  • Kid-friendly activity areas designed to keep younger visitors engaged

Everything is centralized at OWA, so you’re not bouncing between locations or guessing where to go next. You can map out your day around a morning launch, spend time working through the vendor rows and performances, then circle back for the evening flight and glow without needing to leave the grounds.

Admission is free, which makes it easy to treat this as a full-day event or a shorter stop depending on your schedule. Foley’s location also works in your favor, especially if you’re pairing the festival with time at the beach or nearby spots along the Gulf Coast.

What you take with you isn’t just the view from a distance, but the up-close details: The sound of burners firing, the scale of the balloons when they’re fully inflated, and the way the field shifts from open space to packed crowd in minutes. It’s all right there, happening at ground level, and that’s what separates this from a quick roadside stop. Foley turns into a working launch field for the weekend, and you’re standing in the middle of it!
